Shared Action for Healthier Oceans
In celebration of World Oceans Day 2026, SM Cares brought its environmental advocacy to the shore. Under the banner "Empowering Communities for an SM Waste-Free Future," the organization successfully mobilized 7,500 employees, tenants, partners, and local volunteers to participate in a nationwide coastal cleanup.
The initiative resulted in the collection and diversion of 19,000 kilograms of trash from coastal areas and waterways. This massive collective effort highlights a growing commitment to marine preservation and responsible waste management.
The SM Green Movement in Action
Protecting the ocean is a shared responsibility that requires ongoing vigilance. The World Oceans Day cleanup is part of a larger, year-round calendar of environmental initiatives led by SM Cares, which includes efforts for World Water Day, the International Coastal Cleanup, and National Environment Awareness Month.
Participating locations included SM By the Bay and nine other SM Supermalls branches strategically located near vital waterways and coastal ecosystems.
Beyond the Cleanup: Education and Advocacy
The event served as more than just a physical cleanup; it was a platform for environmental education. At sites like SM By the Bay, volunteers participated in "trash talks" and waste segregation demonstrations. These sessions provided practical knowledge on how to manage waste responsibly at home, preventing trash from ever reaching the sea.
Engr. Liza B. Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and SM Cares Program Director for Environment, emphasized the importance of community involvement. "Through the SM Green Movement, we hope to inspire everyday responsibility—because for every volunteer who shows up, every piece of waste removed, and every habit changed, our waste-free future is more within reach."

A Sustainable Future
For SM Cares, these cleanups are essential to their broader mission of bringing sustainability outside of mall walls and into the communities that need it most. By fostering a culture of shared responsibility, the SM Green Movement aims to ensure that marine life and coastal ecosystems are protected for the next generation.
This initiative is a testament to what can be achieved when private sectors, local government units, and passionate community members unite for a common environmental cause.
