Pioneering a Greener Future: A Look at SM Supermalls’ Decades of Sustainability

Long before environmental mandates became industry standard, SM Supermalls had already integrated sustainability into its core operations. The company’s journey toward environmental stewardship began in the 1990s with the installation of a wastewater treatment plant at SM Southmall. This early project, spearheaded by Mr. Hans Sy, Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings, established a vision where business growth and environmental responsibility work in tandem.

Today, this vision continues to drive the design and management of SM’s 99 malls across the Philippines and China.

Key Pillars of SM’s Sustainability Efforts

SM Supermalls has implemented several industry-leading programs that focus on resource conservation and waste reduction:

  • Water Conservation: SM recycles approximately 6.6 million cubic meters of wastewater annually—an amount equivalent to nearly 3,000 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Notably, SM Baguio utilizes rainwater harvesting, recycling over 19,000 cubic meters for operational use.

  • Waste Management: The Trash To Cash Recycling Market has become a staple program, collecting roughly 1.5 million kilograms of recyclables every year and actively promoting waste segregation among shoppers.

  • Energy Efficiency: The company operates one of the largest rooftop solar networks in the country, featuring an estimated 200,000 panels covering 65 hectares. This massive infrastructure significantly reduces the carbon footprint of mall operations.

  • Sustainable Mobility: SM is actively supporting the transition to electric vehicles by maintaining a network of 160 EV charging stations across its malls, with further expansion planned.

  • Air Quality and Design: Features such as the SkyGardens and open architectural spaces prioritize natural ventilation, improving indoor air quality and creating a more comfortable environment for patrons.

A Proactive Approach to Green Operations

SM’s commitment to sustainability remains ahead of regulatory curves. The company’s established green practices align with and often exceed the requirements set by recent sustainability disclosure mandates for large entities. By integrating these practices into the blueprint of every mall, SM ensures that its expansion across the country does not come at the cost of the environment.

As the company continues to evolve, it remains focused on building resilient urban spaces. By prioritizing innovative, eco-friendly solutions, SM Supermalls aims to ensure that the communities it serves benefit from a healthier and more sustainable environment for generations to come.

Final Thoughts

SM Supermalls’ legacy of environmental action demonstrates the power of long-term planning. By viewing malls as essential community infrastructure, the company has managed to turn retail spaces into platforms for positive environmental change, proving that sustainability is not just a goal, but a permanent part of the business model.
