SM Supermalls has officially become the first mall operator to roll out the Department of Energy’s (DOE) new movement: O.N.E.: Oras Natin sa Efficiency. This nationwide initiative is a response to the country’s current State of National Energy Emergency, which highlights geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions as primary threats to energy security.
Anchored on the message “One Hour, One Energy, One Nation,” the campaign encourages Filipinos to adopt coordinated energy reduction as a shared national habit. The launch ceremony, held at the SM Mall of Asia Globe, featured key officials from the DOE, local government representatives, and SM leadership.
Operational Commitment to Energy Savings
As part of the rollout, SM is implementing specific energy reduction windows across its properties. During these periods, the mall operator will switch off non-essential lighting, including:
Façade lighting and pylons
Decorative displays and ambient architectural lights
Unnecessary internal lighting in public spaces
To ensure accountability, SM has assigned dedicated energy officers at each property. These officers will monitor participation and report actual energy savings data directly to the DOE.
Building Lasting Habits
Beyond the ceremonial switch-offs, the campaign aims to foster a culture of conservation. SM will leverage its nationwide network to disseminate energy efficiency tips and educational materials to tenants, employees, and millions of daily shoppers. The goal is to encourage visitors to extend these energy-saving practices from the mall into their own homes and workplaces.
“It is not just about one hour,” said Junias M. Eusebio, Vice President for Mall Operations at SM Supermalls. “It is about what that one hour teaches us. That energy efficiency can be practical. That sustainability can be part of everyday life.”
Part of a Larger Sustainability Movement
This initiative integrates into the existing SM Green Movement and the work of SM Cares, the company's corporate social responsibility arm. The campaign complements SM’s ongoing investments in renewable energy, including its extensive solar rooftop network and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.
By taking this lead role in the O.N.E. campaign, SM Supermalls aims to demonstrate how the private sector can effectively support national stability through small, consistent, and collective actions.
Final Thoughts
The O.N.E. campaign serves as a reminder that national energy security is a shared responsibility. Through this partnership with the DOE, SM is positioning its malls not just as retail destinations, but as hubs for promoting sustainable and responsible energy consumption among the Filipino public.
