Recycling Gets a Tech Upgrade: SM Launches Sparklo Reverse Vending Machines in the PH

Recycling just got as easy as dropping a coin into a vending machine. SM Supermalls is leveling up its commitment to the environment by partnering with global cleantech company Sparklo. This collaboration marks the first time Sparklo’s innovative reverse vending machine technology has landed in the Philippines, expanding the SM Green Recycling Machine (GRM) program.

Part of the broader SM Green Movement, this initiative turns every mall visit into a chance to protect the planet. By making recycling accessible and rewarding, SM is helping Filipinos build sustainable habits while keeping plastic out of landfills.

Technology for a Waste Free Future

The process is simple. Customers can bring their empty PET plastic bottles to the machine, which then collects and sorts them for proper recycling. According to SM Supermalls President Steven Tan, these machines elevate the mall's role in ensuring a greener future by making environmental responsibility a seamless part of the malling experience.

Every bottle recycled through these machines supports SM Prime Holdings’ commitment to a circular economy. Instead of ending up in the ocean or a landfill, these plastics are processed and transformed into useful community assets, proving that waste can have a second life.

Where to Find the SM Green Recycling Machines

In the initial phase of the program, 10 machines have already been deployed at key SM locations across the country. You can start recycling today at the following malls:

  • Metro Manila: SM Mall of Asia, S Maison, SM Southmall, SM Aura, SM North EDSA, SM Megamall, The Podium, and SM City San Lazaro.

  • Visayas and Mindanao: SM Seaside City Cebu and SM Lanang.

But this is only the beginning. The partnership with Sparklo includes a planned rollout of 30 additional machines in more SM Supermalls nationwide, significantly scaling the country’s recycling ecosystem.

Small Actions, Massive Impact

The Waste Free Future campaign thrives on community participation. Ellen Quilas, Sparklo Country Manager, highlighted that combining innovative tech with local action is key to promoting responsible waste management.

Through these partnerships and everyday participation from visitors like you, SM is proving that small, simple actions can lead to a cleaner and more sustainable tomorrow. Next time you head to your most loved SM mall, don't forget to bring your empty plastic bottles and join the movement.
