Beyond the Trash: SM Coastal Cleanups Lead the Charge for Marine Protection
In celebration of World Water Day, SM Supermalls through its CSR arm, SM Cares, took to the shores to prove that protecting our oceans starts with more than just a garbage bag. This year, the initiative spanned six locations across the country, turning a standard cleanup into a massive masterclass in environmental stewardship.
Participating malls included SM City La Union, SM City Urdaneta Central, SM City Tanza, SM City Daet, SM City Consolacion, SM Seaside City Cebu, and SM J Mall. Together, these communities worked to divert waste away from the sea while learning exactly how our daily habits affect the blue parts of our map.
Education is the Real Game Changer
This year’s cleanup was not just about the volume of trash collected. It was about waste segregation education. Volunteers did not just pick up litter; they sorted and categorized it to see firsthand what is actually polluting our coasts. From plastic packaging to beverage containers, the goal was to identify the culprits that threaten marine life.
Engr. Liza Silerio, Vice President for Corporate Compliance at SM Supermalls, noted that protecting marine environments requires an end to end approach. By deepening awareness and teaching proper sorting and disposal, SM is aiming to inspire a long term behavioral change that lasts far beyond a single weekend.
Part of a Bigger Movement
These coastal efforts are key components of the SM Green Movement and the company’s Waste Free Future campaign. It is a proactive strategy designed to protect the planet while encouraging the Filipino spirit of bayanihan. By bringing together mall communities, local stakeholders, and environmental partners, SM is building a collective defense for our natural resources.
