According to Joaquin San Agustin, SM Supermalls Executive Vice President for Marketing, biking is now an integrated part of every single SM mall in the country. Here is how they are changing the game:

  • Eco Friendly Protection: In a genius move, upcycled tires are used to cushion bike racks, preventing those annoying frame scratches.

  • Intuitive Level Design: Clearer cycling lanes and more secure parking are being baked into every new development and renovation.

  • Community Hubs: SM properties have become a go to haven for cycling groups, with tenants even adjusting hours to accommodate early morning rides.

A Trophy Case Full of Green Wins

The effort has not gone unnoticed. At the recent Mobility Awards, SM swept the floor with One Gold, 11 Silver, and 22 Bronze awards for its mall efforts across the Philippines.


But the final boss of recognition came from the DOTr. They cited the sustainable approach at SM as a masterclass in private sector leadership. Specifically, the Pedal Power 2025 program was named the Notable Advocacy Program, while the overall SM Supermalls Sustainable Mobility and Bike Friendly program received a citation for Notable Development by the Private Sector.
