Pedal Power to the Max: SM Supermalls Scores Record Breaking 36 Wins for Biker Inclusivity
For those of us who traded four wheels for two during the pandemic, biking was not just a hobby. It was a lifeline. When public transport hit a standstill, the cycling community stepped up, and SM Supermalls was right there to provide the ultimate spawn point for active mobility.
What started as a heartfelt response to the COVID 19 crisis has evolved into a massive, nationwide movement. Today, SM has officially cemented its status as a leader in bike friendly spaces, hauling in a record breaking 34 awards at the 2025 Mobility Awards, plus two major citations from the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
From Parking Spots to a Full Biking Ecosystem
The evolution of the bike program at SM is like watching a base model get a legendary spec upgrade. It began with simple exclusive parking spots and quickly scaled into a comprehensive Active Mobility strategy.
According to Joaquin San Agustin, SM Supermalls Executive Vice President for Marketing, biking is now an integrated part of every single SM mall in the country. Here is how they are changing the game:
Dedicated Gear: Malls are now equipped with essential tools for on site repairs.
Eco Friendly Protection: In a genius move, upcycled tires are used to cushion bike racks, preventing those annoying frame scratches.
Intuitive Level Design: Clearer cycling lanes and more secure parking are being baked into every new development and renovation.
Community Hubs: SM properties have become a go to haven for cycling groups, with tenants even adjusting hours to accommodate early morning rides.
A Trophy Case Full of Green Wins
The effort has not gone unnoticed. At the recent Mobility Awards, SM swept the floor with One Gold, 11 Silver, and 22 Bronze awards for its mall efforts across the Philippines.
But the final boss of recognition came from the DOTr. They cited the sustainable approach at SM as a masterclass in private sector leadership. Specifically, the Pedal Power 2025 program was named the Notable Advocacy Program, while the overall SM Supermalls Sustainable Mobility and Bike Friendly program received a citation for Notable Development by the Private Sector.
More Than Just a Mall
As SM celebrates its 40 Super Years, it is clear they are shifting gears toward a more inclusive future. For the Pinoy biker, SM is no longer just a place to shop. It is a safe, easy, and inclusive space to park, repair, and connect with the community.
Whether you are a casual commuter or a hard core cycling enthusiast, SM Supermalls is proving that the future of urban travel is on two wheels.
