Being part of the solution for a cleaner planet just got a major UI update. SM Prime Holdings Inc. has launched The SM Waste Free Future (WFF) Manual, a 17 page visual guide designed to make sustainability as easy as following a quest line.
Launched at SM’s first Sustainability Expo, this manual is all about turning green actions into daily habits. According to Liza Silerio, SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and Sustainability, the goal is a two pronged approach: making waste management accessible and ensuring those habits are easy to practice every day.
Back to Basics: What is Actually in Our Trash?
To get the best data, SM Prime conducted a Waste Analysis Characterization Study at the SM Mall of Asia Complex. They identified the top 10 most common waste items, including PET bottles, plastic cutlery, coffee cups, and food packaging.
The manual makes disposal simple with the RDC (Recyclable, Disposable, Compostable) system found in all SM Malls:
Blue Bins (Recyclable): Drop your PET bottles here so they can be sent back to factories for recycling.
Gray Bins (Disposable): This is for plastic cutlery, single use plastics, soiled coffee cups, food packaging, and sanitary products.
Green Bins (Compostable): Strictly for food waste with no packaging or cutlery attached.
Special Focus: E-Waste and Cyberzone
As tech lovers, we know electronic waste is a huge deal. Whether it is old batteries or broken gadgets, you can find special e-waste bins at SM Cyberzone areas. These serve as easy drop off points for recycling or safe processing of your old tech accessories before they hit the landfill.
Turn Your Trash into Cash
Want to earn while cleaning up? Every first Friday and Saturday of the month, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, you can bring your clean and dry recyclables to designated Trash to Cash areas. It is a great way to support a circular economy while getting a little economic incentive back.
Real Impact: Coastal Cleanups
Since 2019, SM has already collected 70,000 kilograms of plastic waste. But they are not stopping there. SM Cares regularly organizes coastal cleanups to stop marine pollution. Last year alone, volunteers diverted 200,000 kilograms of litter from the ocean.
If you want to join the movement, mark your calendars for the next Coastal Cleanup drive on March 22. It will take place across several locations, including SM La Union, SM City Urdaneta Central, SM City Tanza, SM City J Mall, SM City Daet, and SM City Consolacion in celebration of World Water Day.
By communicating these practices clearly, SM is helping everyone move toward a Waste Free Future. When we all take those small, thoughtful steps, the results for the planet are massive.
